Genetics Technology
The Michener Institute offers a two-year advanced diploma program to train as a genetics technologist.
As a genetics technologist, you will perform laboratory tests that help diagnose, treat, and monitor a wide variety of genetic disorder and many types of cancer.
Note: The Michener Institue is located in Toronto, and successful applicants are required to relocate for a portion of the program. Job opportunities exist in Manitoba upon graduation.

College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba
The College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) is the regulatory body for medical laboratory technologists in Manitoba. Registration with the CMLTM is a requirement to practice in Manitoba.
Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science
The Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is the national certifying body and national professional society for medical laboratory assistants in all Canadian provinces and territories, except Quebec.
Anyone who wants to work as an MLT in Manitoba – whether internationally educated or a graduate of a Canadian program – must pass the CSMLS National Certification Examination. To be eligible to write the exam, you must have graduated from an EQual ™ accredited Canadian medical laboratory educational program or completed a Prior Learning Assessment through CSMLS.
Manitoba Association of Medical Laboratory Science
The Manitoba Association of Medical Laboratory Science (MAMLS) is the provincial professional association of CSMLS.

I started my career as a medical laboratory technologist in Winnipeg, but when the opportunity to work in Flin Flon presented itself, I took it – and I am so glad I did.
At first it was scary to move to a northern community where I didn’t know anyone, but the patients and staff have been so welcoming, which has encouraged me to give the ultimate care in what I do.
Working in a core lab in a northern community has allowed me to work within my full scope of practice and make use of all of the knowledge I gained in school. The pace is a bit slower, so I’ve been able to take the time to adjust to each bench and get comfortable before moving on to a new one.
I was recently promoted to senior technologist in Chemistry in my lab – I admire my seniors and charge for what they do in order to keep the lab running smoothly and efficiently, and it is exciting to be able to take on more responsibility.
