North Zone Communities

- Churchill
- Located on the western shore of Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Churchill River, Churchill is Canada’s only deep-water Arctic port. It is a world-renowned destination for viewing polar bears, beluga whales, and the Aurora Borealis, offering a life of profound connection to the subarctic landscape.
- Flin Flon
- perched on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Flin Flon is a unique mining city built directly on the rocky outcrops of the Canadian Shield. Unlike many planned communities, its streets wind and climb around the rock, giving it a distinct, non-grid character. It is famous for its vibrant arts scene, rich mining history, and the crystal-clear lakes that surround it.
- Gillam
- Known as the “Power Centre of Manitoba,” Gillam is a modern, prosperous town located on the Nelson River. It serves as the operational headquarters for three of Manitoba Hydro’s largest generating stations. Despite its remote location, the strong industrial base provides the community with amenities often found in much larger cities, including a state-of-the-art recreation centre.
- Lynn Lake
- Known as “The Sport Fishing Capital of Manitoba,” Lynn Lake is located near the end of the road (PR 391) in the province’s far northwest. Originally a major gold and nickel mining hub, it is now a quiet, tight-knit community surrounded by pristine lakes. A major revitalization is on the horizon, with the Alamos Gold project currently in the construction phase, promising to breathe new industrial life into the town.
- The Pas
- Known as “The Gateway to the North”, The Pas is a multi-industry northern Manitoba town serving the surrounding region. The main components of the region’s economy are agriculture, forestry, commercial fishing, tourism, transportation, and services (especially health and education).
- Thompson
- Known as the “Hub of the North,” Thompson is the largest city in Northern Manitoba. It serves as the regional trade and service center for the surrounding communities. Nestled in the boreal forest, it offers a unique blend of urban amenities and rugged wilderness adventure. It is famously known as the “Wolf Capital of the World.”

- Dauphin
- Dauphin is famously known for its deep Ukrainian heritage and as the host of Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival. The city offers a rich blend of cultural history, modern urban amenities, and immediate access to rugged wilderness.
- Deloraine
- Deloraine is a vibrant community located in the southwest corner of Manitoba at the foot of the Turtle Mountains. Known for its scenic rolling terrain and rich hardwood forests, it serves as a regional hub for agriculture and outdoor recreation.
- Gilbert Plains
- Gilbert Plains is a peaceful, family-friendly community located in the valley between Riding Mountain National Park and Duck Mountain Provincial Park. It is celebrated for its high quality of life, agricultural heritage, and abundance of year-round outdoor recreational activities.
- Grandview
- Grandview is a small agricultural community located in the beautiful valley between Riding Mountain National Park and Duck Mountain Provincial Park. It is known for its world-class fishing, abundant wildlife, and its role as a regional hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Melita
- Melita is a thriving agricultural and oil-sector community located at the junction of Highways 3 and 242. It is characterized by its wide-open prairie landscapes, rich wildlife, and a community-oriented atmosphere that makes it an ideal home for families and professionals.
- Russell
- Russell is a thriving community situated at the intersection of three major highways. It is the western gateway to Manitoba, known for its iconic “Main Street” arches, its role as a regional service center, and its proximity to the Asessippi Ski Area & Resort.
- Shoal Lake
- Located at the junction of the Yellowhead Highway and Highway 21, Shoal Lake is a quintessential “parkland” town. It is defined by the beautiful lake at its center and its role as a regional healthcare anchor for the surrounding agricultural and First Nations communities.
- Ste. Rose
- Nestled between Lake Dauphin and Lake Manitoba, Ste. Rose du Lac is a picturesque community with deep French-Canadian and Métis roots. It is a major agricultural center, particularly for cattle ranching, and offers a robust bilingual environment for residents and professionals.
- Swan River
- Swan River is nestled in the fertile Swan River Valley between the Duck Mountain and Porcupine Provincial Forests. It is a bustling agricultural and forestry hub that offers “big town” amenities—including a major regional hospital—while maintaining a friendly, small-town atmosphere.
- Waterhen
- Waterhen is a peaceful “Northern community” designated place located approximately 300 km north of Winnipeg. It is renowned for being the site of the first successful wood bison reintroduction in Manitoba and offers a life defined by pristine waterways and world-class hunting and fishing.
- Winnipegosis
- Located 60 km north of Dauphin, Winnipegosis is a historic fishing and ranching village. It is known for its stunning lake views, friendly residents, and its role as a quiet retreat for outdoor enthusiasts.
