Locums

Rural, Urban and Remote Medical Practices

The Manitoba Locum Tenens Program (MLTP), part of the Health Care Retention & Recruitment Office (HCRRO), connects Family Medicine physicians with locum opportunities across Manitoba. The program supports rural, urban, and remote medical practices by providing short-term locum coverage in areas where availability can be limited, helping ensure continuity of care and access to time away for physicians.

Locum placements typically range from 5 to 28 days in rural and northern communities and 5 days to 17 weeks in urban centres. Finding the right fit matters, and HCRRO works closely with both physicians and facility sites to support strong, mutually beneficial matches through ongoing outreach, recruitment, and information sharing.

How Locums Work

The MLTP will on adequate notice supply locum tenens physicians who are suitably qualified to fill family practice physician’s vacancies. Exact timing will be dependent on locum availability. Locums are ordinarily allocated between 5 and 28 days in the rural & northern regions and 5 to 17 days in urban regions (Winnipeg & Brandon).

The operation of the program requires contractual agreements between the various parties involved.

Physician Registration

The physician must be licensed and registered to practice in Manitoba and have additional certification requirements or be willing to obtain certification prior to accepting a placement.

Upon creation of their online accounts, physicians will be notified by email whenever new locum opportunities are posted to this website.

Recruiter Registration

The MLTP is designed to provide support to rural and remote Manitoba communities with four (4) or fewer permanent physicians, and to urban practices with ten (10) or fewer physicians, to obtain locum coverage so resident physicians may take time off for vacation or CME leave with the assurance that their patients will have continued medical care.

Once registered with the online MLTP Locum Program the RHA or Recruiter will send the “Request for Locum Services” online form to initiate a formal request for Locum Services. Deadlines for locum requests will depend on availability of locum physicians.

The MLTP will on adequate notice supply locum tenens physicians who are suitably qualified to fill family practice rural physician vacancies.

The Manitoba Locum Tenens Program will coordinate and schedule all requests for locum coverage.
