Medical laboratory assistants are an important part of helping a lab run smoothly. They support the work of medical laboratory technologists by collecting, sorting, preparing, and processing lab samples so they can be tested and analyzed.
Responsibilities can include:
- Patient registration into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Performing phlebotomies (taking blood from patients)
- Aliquoting samples
- Preparing reagents
- Urinalysis
- Loading specimens onto analyzers
Role Requirements
- Medical laboratory assistants spend a lot of time either sitting or standing
- Medical laboratory assistants perform repetitive tasks
- Medical laboratory assistants must follow strict safety procedures to keep themselves safe from hazardous materials
- Medical laboratory assistants generally work 8-hour shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
