“My favourite part about being a paramedic in rural Manitoba is the extra time we spend with our patients.

With longer transport distances, we have time to get to know them, we have more time to see the results of our treatment, and because we may be called upon to transport or transfer them again, we sometimes have the ability to see them later in their recovery.

It’s my co-workers that make this the best job. We spend 12 hours at a time together, often four days in a row so it’s like a family. If it’s a tough day, they get it and will help get you through it. Great relationships are made here.”

“I hadn’t heard of medical radiation technology until I was looking into post-secondary opportunities, but once I learned more about it, I didn’t want to do anything else. I was drawn in by the opportunity to support patient care and the variety of paths my career could take, and it ended up being a perfect fit for me.

I started my career in X-ray at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg in 2009 and moved into CT in 2011. After 11 years in that role, I was ready for a change. I always wanted to work in women’s health, and I was interested in walking alongside patients on their journey from diagnosis to post-surgical imaging, so I decided to pursue mammography.

CT and mammography are two very different modalities, but I felt completely supported by my team throughout my transition. I was able to review my work with colleagues and management which has allowed me to improve my skills and feel comfortable in my role.

A mammogram is a very private examination, so I make sure to build a good rapport with my patients. A personal touch helps to calm their nerves and ensure that they are comfortable for me to capture high-quality images that will assist in screening and diagnosis.

Diagnostics offers so many opportunities to grow your skills and specialize in new areas. Mammography is such a rewarding area of practice, and I’m so glad I took the leap!”

“I became a respiratory therapist 9 years ago after reading about the profession in an article about Children’s Hospital. I wanted to make difference, especially in young patients lives.

No two days are the same for us. Every patient interaction is different. It doesn’t feel like a job, every day I wake up and I’m excited to just go and see people.

We are always the advocate for the patients. I feel lucky in my role because I have the opportunity to listen to patients and help them get through the day. It’s a gift we’re able to give our patients on top of helping them to breath better.

We do a lot of diagnostic testing to help the respirologist figure out what kind of disease process the patient may have. As a respiratory therapist we are at the beginning of the treatment process.  There are lots of ways that we can help patients including managing patients on ventilators when they’re at their sickest moments and help them heal.

When you have a family member that’s critically sick, we’re able to develop a strong relationship, and help guide them through the process. If you really wanted to make a difference in people’s live respiratory therapy is the perfect profession.  It’s fulfilling enriching. You’re always learning and connecting with people.”

“I make every effort to ensure my patients feel understood, respected and supported throughout their surgical journey. Our team relies upon close teamwork and collaboration across a wide variety of professions including nursing, surgeons and anesthesiologists.

We have a huge responsibility here. Our patients are vulnerable and we really speak for them. It’s work to be proud of.
