Medical laboratory assistants are an important part of helping a lab run smoothly. They support the work of medical laboratory technologists by collecting, sorting, preparing, and processing lab samples so they can be tested and analyzed.

Responsibilities can include:

  • Patient registration into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Performing phlebotomies (taking blood from patients)
  • Aliquoting samples
  • Preparing reagents
  • Urinalysis
  • Loading specimens onto analyzers

Role Requirements

  • Medical laboratory assistants spend a lot of time either sitting or standing
  • Medical laboratory assistants perform repetitive tasks
  • Medical laboratory assistants must follow strict safety procedures to keep themselves safe from hazardous materials
  • Medical laboratory assistants generally work 8-hour shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
