Certified Athletic Therapists are best known for their quick-thinking on-field emergency care of professional and elite athletes. The first to respond when someone gets hurt they are experts at injury assessment and rehabilitation. It’s that same mix of on-site care and active rehabilitation skills that makes Athletic Therapists so effective in treating the musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, and joints) injuries of all Canadians, whether on the field or in the clinic.

Athletic therapists adhere to the Sports Medicine Model of care. They treat a wide range of patients, from kids with concussions to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery, using various manual therapies, modalities, exercise prescription and even bracing and taping. The treatment varies but the objective doesn’t: an Athletic Therapist’s goal is to help clients return to their usual activities, whether that means playing competitive sports or walking to the mailbox and back.

Certified Athletic Therapists can be recognized by the credential CAT(C). Highly trained and versatile, Certified Athletic Therapists can be found in environments such as:

  • Private sports medicine and therapy clinics
  • Professional sports, such as the NHL, CFL, NBA, MLB
  • Elite games, such as the Olympics, Pan Am, Canada Games
  • Teaching or research at universities and colleges
  • High school, amateur and varsity athletics
  • Professional dance companies
  • Sales and marketing for performance and rehabilitation brands
  • Municipal government and industrial workplaces
  • Insurance industry

Bachelor Of Kinesiology – Athletic Therapy

  • The BKin-AT Degree program:
    A four-year program that includes a strong core curriculum. The program is accredited by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) and designed to assist students in acquiring the body of knowledge pertaining to the prevention, immediate care, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal orthopedic injuries.

    Extensive clinical and fieldwork experiences are provided so that students can apply their knowledge and skills in practical settings and meet the practicum requirements for certification. Students will acquire the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and all the prerequisites necessary to become certified as Athletic Therapists in accordance with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA).
  • The B.Kin. – AT Program:
    Is designed for students interested in careers in the expanding field of physical activity, health and wellness.
    In addition to taking core courses in the exercise sciences, students have the flexibility to take additional courses or practicums that allow them to design an educational experience best suited to their interests. Students may obtain a variety of fitness-related qualifications and certifications that would complement their career aspirations.

    Kinesiology has a broad focus, and includes emerging areas of interest to today’s student and employer. It includes chronic disease prevention, physical activity promotion, athletic therapy, personal fitness training, cardiac rehabilitation, sport science, sport management, and corporate and community wellness. Classroom lectures and well-equipped labs balance theory with hands-on learning, and a unique Faculty comprised of active researchers and scholars who teach in the areas where they lead in research. In this way, the program and Faculty will continue to innovate and diversify right alongside the dynamic field of Kinesiology.
