Licensed Practical Nurse
In Manitoba, in order to become an Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you must:
- take a two-year program in Manitoba, earn a Diploma in Practical Nursing and pass a national exam, or
- hold active practicing registration as a practical nurse in another Canadian jurisdiction, or
- if you completed nursing education outside of Canada, complete an assessment of your competence, complete additional courses to bridge competency gap (if required) and pass a national exam
In order to practice as an LPN in Manitoba, you must also be registered with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba.
LPNs work both autonomously and in partnership with other members of the health care team in Manitoba to combine:
- nursing knowledge
- skills and judgment when treating health conditions
- promoting health
- preventing illness and assisting clients to achieve an optimal state of health
LPNs provide a full range of nursing care in a variety of settings to clients with a range of complex health conditions across the lifespan.
LPNs in Manitoba may be expected to care for clients with complex health needs, whose health outcomes may be unpredictable..
Many employment opportunities exist for LPNs and continue to be in demand by employers. LPNs find employment in tertiary, acute and community hospitals, long term care facilities, personal care homes, medical clinics, home care, doctors’ offices and in the community in various capacities. As well, some entrepreneurial LPNs are establishing their own businesses.
